ABOUT

As the saying “good wine does not travel” suggests, winemaking begins with growing grapes.

A winery where you can see the faces of both grape growers and winemakers.

FEATURE STORY

About NIKKAWA Winery

As the saying goes, “Good wine does not travel,” winemaking begins in the vineyard. NIKKAWA is a small winery founded in September 2020 in Katsunuma, Yamanashi, an area said to have nearly 1,000 years of Koshu grape-growing history. Grapes are carefully grown by producers whose relationship with the winery goes beyond a conventional contract grower arrangement, and are then crafted into wine with equal care. As a small winery, NIKKAWA is able to maintain close attention to every detail and approach winemaking with the affection of raising one’s own child.

Muscat Bailey A (Red)

• Muscat Bailey A Barrel Aged 2019\n\nAfter fermentation and maturation in stainless-steel tanks, the wine is aged for a further nine months in barrel. Barrel-aged Cabernet Sauvignon is blended in to add depth to Muscat Bailey A, which can otherwise taste straightforward. Delicious served lightly chilled.\n\n• Muscat Bailey A more 2020\n\nMade from fully ripened grapes, this wine contains abundant furaneol, giving it sweet strawberry-like nuances. Its fruity aroma is balanced by tannins, making it an excellent match for dishes seasoned with Japanese dashi, soy sauce, mirin, and other traditional flavors.

Muscat Bailey A (Rosé)

• Muscat Bailey A Rosé 2020\n\nPrimarily made from Muscat Bailey A and co-fermented with Japan’s native Yama Sauvignon, this is a complex rosé that offers more depth than a single-variety wine. Enjoy its bright, sweet fragrance.\n\n• Muscat Bailey A Rosé C 2020\n\nA blend of Muscat Bailey A and Chardonnay, this slightly lower-alcohol rosé is designed for lunchtime drinking. Its vivid color, floral aroma, and crisp, refreshing taste make it easy to enjoy. The concept is “a wine to drink with pasta at lunch.”

Koshu

• Koshu Yogen no Tori 2018\n\nA full-bodied Koshu wine featuring a label inspired by a legendary bird said to have predicted an epidemic during the Edo period.\n\n• Koshu Barrel Aged 2019\n\nMade with 100% Koshu grapes from Katsunuma. Fermented in stainless-steel tanks, then aged in barrel for nine months. Using only fully ripened grapes gives the wine nuances reminiscent of orange wine. Fruity yet balanced, with noticeable tannin beneath the fruit.\n\n• Koshu Sakura Jizo 2020\n\nMade with 100% Katsunuma-grown Koshu grapes. Fresh citrus aromas, light and well-balanced acidity, and a clean, fruit-forward finish define this balanced wine.

Adirondac

• Adirondac 2020\n\nTrue to its reputation as an intensely aromatic grape, Adirondac offers a rich, exuberant fragrance. In contrast to its sweet aroma, the palate is distinctly dry and crisp, followed by expanding notes of oak. Enjoy the intriguing contrast between aroma and taste.
