Chichibu Coffee Launches Special “Wine Barrel Aged Coffee” Matured in Chichibu Wine Barrels from October 11

MOJI Product Co., Ltd. will begin limited sales of a new product, “WINE BARREL AGED COFFEE,” made using wine barrels from Chichibu Wine, on October 11, 2025.

The product is said to feature careful attention not only to flavor but also to packaging.

Here are the details.

About “WINE BARREL AGED COFFEE”

“WINE BARREL AGED COFFEE” is a new product from MOJI Product Co., Ltd., operator of Chichibu Coffee, using wine barrels from Chichibu Wine.

Chichibu Coffee has previously developed collaboration products with local temples and shrines as well as seasonal regional specialties.

This project began when a regional trading company in Ogano Town obtained barrels from Chichibu Wine and, through Musashino Bank, which acted as an intermediary, approached Chichibu Coffee about possible ways to reuse them.

The product uses a barrel that had been used to age Merlot harvested from Chichibu Wine’s own Karasawa vineyard, whose wines have received several awards in the past.

After testing seven coffees from around the world and making step-by-step adjustments to roast levels from light to dark, Chichibu Coffee producer and international coffee appraiser Ayui Fukuda conducted strict cupping evaluations. The final choice was a coffee from El Salvador with a high-quality, mild acidity that allows both the coffee and wine characteristics to stand out once the wine aroma has transferred to the beans.

Flavor and Package Design

For “WINE BARREL AGED COFFEE,” green coffee beans are placed in a wine barrel inside Chichibu Coffee’s temperature- and humidity-controlled laboratory. They are aged for about one month while being stirred once a day, allowing the rich wine-derived aromas to transfer carefully into the beans.

Roasted to a medium level, the coffee is said to deliver a distinctive flavor combining concentrated red-grape fruitiness with a lingering impression from the wine barrel.

It works well not only hot but also iced or as café au lait, offering a new coffee experience in a variety of settings.

Special attention was also paid to the packaging.

The roasted beans are filled one by one into half-size red-wine bottles of the type used by Chichibu Wine.

The label evokes both coffee and grapes and uses touches of gold foil for a clean, premium-looking design.

The product will be sold in limited quantities in an original black box.

An original leaflet explaining the product and recommended ways to drink it is also included. Its premium presentation makes it especially suitable as a gift.
